SOD - ilDance’s first work in 2012

This is the first piece in our series looking back at 10 years of ilDance, celebrating the organisation’s anniversary.

In this series, we will speak to those who have impacted ilDance’s journey over the years and feature projects that have shaped the company but in this piece, we simply take a look at the company’s first production back in March 2012.

On 13 March 2012, the premiere of SOD took place at Atalante in Gothenburg, the first co-creation by Israel Aloni and Lee Brummer as ilDance.

ilDance was established after Aloni and Brummer worked in Sweden and internationally as independent artists as well as having been involved in each other’s work for many years.

They wanted to create an entity which would enrich and cultivate both their creative practices as individual artists and offer them the possibility to co-create and develop an additional voice as an artistic duo.

The company’s first work SOD, which is Hebrew for ‘the secret’, explored our innermost fears, questioned how we look at our fellow human beings and what sides we dare to show ourselves to someone else.

There’s a fine line between defending our own truth and offending somebody else’s.

An audition for the work was held at Dansforum in Gothenburg with 40 dancers participating in a class led by Rafi Sadi, a former Cullberg dancer, before Lee and Israel took over the afternoon exercises.

The seven artists selected to perform were Johan Forsberg , Mari Hansen, Stephanie Hodgson, Nassim Meki, Marie Nilseng, Ina Helen Oskarsen and Robert Sillberg.

SOD was presented in collaboration with Atalante and VI Production, led by Daniel Isakson, with five performances between 13 and 16 March.
