Dancing Histor(y)ies Workshop in Mérida

The ilDance team, including Israel Aloni, Hanna Magdalena Gödl, and Victor Persson, visited Mérida for the Dancing Histor(y)ies workshops with local communities and preparations for the upcoming festival this summer. The workshops offered an immersive journey through the intersection of dance, culture, and heritage.

The agenda was enlightening and offered a multifaceted experience. The ilDance team attended rehearsals and engaged in a dialogue with local contemporary dance artists, they visited and learned about the ancient history of the Roman Hippodrome, and indulged in an invigorating artistic exchange with incredible local flamenco artists. The team also watched a performance of the carnival’s troupe "Karmina o Revienta", engaged in discussions on Spanish folklore, and exchanged with local artisans who are dedicated to preserving the unique practice of Roman gladiators.

Additionally, the workshop featured guided tours of Alcazaba and other Roman remains which provided further insights into the city's layered history and heritage. ilDance’s time in Merida concluded with youth workshops at the Taptc Drama School, fostering creativity and cultural exchange among the participants.

Through these experiences and enlightening discussions, the team unraveled the intricate threads of Mérida's cultural tapestry, exploring its rich heritage and vibrant artistic traditions.
