New work titled PASSING, developed by Israel Aloni and commissioned by Toplocentrala, will premiere on September 4, 2025 in Sofia, Bulgaria. The piece will be performed by five local artists. After the premiere, PASSING will be presenting regularly in the program of Toplocentrala.
PASSING is an examination of the distorted field between being what you say that you are and saying what you feel that you are. It challenges the notion of identity and furthermore, that of its politics. Why do so many of us try to pass the test in the school of social conformism? What are the processes and mechanisms we employ to affirm the identities we assign to what we perceive to be our-self?
After developing Boys Just Want To Have Fun, which disrupts social taboos around male sensuality and sexuality, in PASSING, Aloni is working with a group of five female identifying artists (Mikhaela Griveva, Vasiliya Drebova, Ina Gerginova-Evtimova, Zhanna Pencheva, Emilia Toncheva) to trouble some of the taboos around female identities.
Joining Aloni and the cast in this process are Tomer Giat as choreographer assistant and composer Alexander Evtimov (Sham) who created the original soundtrack.
