ilDance - A production body

Making. Dance. Happen.

About Us

ilDance is an independent production body which is dedicated to contemporary dance and performance art. We are interested in the organic life-form of an organisation and how each organ (project/activity) is both whole and part of the ecosystem of the entire body. We take a fresh perspective on what "independent” is and nurture dynamic, diverse relationships with other individuals, organisations, and organisms. We operate as a whole body.

Rather than working on one project at a time, at ilDance we work simultaneously, organically and dynamically on a number of projects which include multiple artists. The dynamic of our operation contributes to the fullness of each of these projects and creates exciting synergies. Our team and our network are particularly skilled at recognising the potentials which occur in the meeting points between the different projects whilst also enhancing the particular identity of each of these projects.

The multidimensionality of our operation means that we need to maintain numerous relationships and timelines happening at once as well as securing multiple resources.

Whilst there are valuable intersections, each of our different activities support different artists, different communities and targets different audiences.

ilDance’s hybrid organisation has a core team which includes an artistic director, associate director, producer, communicator, accountant and international project consultant as well as 3 advisory board members.

We always work in collaboration with many individuals and organisations which means that our expanded team is large and global.

Rather than operating our own autonomous space, we choose to invest resources in enlivening existing spaces and channelling culture funding to activities which directly meet community and audiences.

Being led by two dance artists our methodologies and strategies are first and foremost informed by movement, dynamics, shifts and adaptability. Dance for us is the knowledge heritage on which our ethics and management practices stand.

We operate in artist-led processes and practice equity. As a heterogenous group we value and celebrate our differences in experiences, identities and background including gender, sexuality, culture and heritage. This eclecticness in our experience is in the heart of the art created in ilDance.

Expertise that we have developed since our beginning in 2012:

● Rigorous and iterative artistic practices rooted in ethics of corporeal empathy and experience of being through movement and encounters.

● Making dynamic contemporary dance and performance art in and for traditional and nonconventional performance spaces, including site-specific and site-responsive processes.

● Artistic research and practice development. ilDance is a home for rigorous, critical and diligent research of movement, dance and choreography, as well as multidisciplinary approaches in collaboration with other art forms and sectors in society.

● Supporting artists in the development of their artistic practices. In addition to our Co-Founders, Lee Brummer and Israel Aloni, ilDance also assists and supports other artists in their creative endeavours.

● Mentorship and assistance to emerging artists in the early stages of their career through both one-on-one and group mentorship contexts

● International cooperation project development and delivery, with particular focus on Creative Europe programs. Our expertise is in projects which hold artistic practice as the origin of knowledge and exploration.

● Artist-led methodologies for creative processes, project management and collaborations.

● Initiating and developing contemporary dance projects in remote, rural and isolated geographic locations across Sweden and internationally.

● Collaboration. We know how to and love to collaborate with individuals, organisations, institutions, municipalities, regional authorities, national bodies and governmental departments.

● Consultancy, advisory, support and coaching of other organisations, cultural programs and institutions on how to keep the artistic practice in the forefront of their operations and how to make use of dance knowledge in the design and implementation of infrastructural mechanisms.

With these articulations in mind, ilDance is determined to continue investing in the evolution of contemporary dance practice and to participate vigorously in the contemporary dance and performance ecology in Sweden, Europe, and beyond.
