Gaga/people class by Lee Brummer
The Gaga/people is based on a deep activation of the body and physical sensations. While class instructions often use rich imagery that stimulate the imagination, the layering of information builds into a multisensory, physically challenging experience. The class is limited to 24 people.

A work-in-progress sharing of TRIUMEQ, by Marco Merenda
TRIUMEQ is a multidisciplinary performance project exploring healing, control and the political economy of care. Rooted in their experience of living with HIV, it asks how a body dependent on daily chemical regulation can reclaim its autonomy and vulnerability.

Through movement, autobiographical text, and sonic experimentation, this sharing will test how physical tension can become an embodied expression of the contradictions of living with HIV. The work will be performed by Marco Merenda using a soundscape developed in collaboration with Christopher Ramm.

In its full development, TRIUMEQ also includes an installation by visual artist Miranda Simón Abelló, 3D video by Luki Becker, sound by Christopher Ramm, and lighting by Doria Worden. The installation becomes the stage for the performance, creating an immersive environment in which bodies, images, objects and sounds interact. These elements are not part of this sharing.

A work in progress sharing of Prison/Prophet Fantasy, by Freddy Houndekindo
Prison/Prophet Fantasy is a performance built around the physical and psychological reality of an athlete training camp. The work begins with a personal fantasy of prison as a place of isolation, discipline, hardship, and transformation: a space where a young Black man might become stronger, more complete, perhaps even a "prophet." This fantasy becomes a lens through which the performance examines masculinity as a cultural system shaped by endurance, sacrifice, self-discipline, and the pursuit of strength.

Rather than focusing on the spectacle of combat, the performance centres on what precedes it: repetition, exhaustion, preparation, doubt, pain, anticipation, and recovery. The training camp becomes both a physical and psychological space of confinement and self-fashioning.

Drawing on Freddy´s practice in dance, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA, he explores the contradiction at the centre of combat sports: while they can reproduce ideals of domination, hardness, and individual strength, they also depend upon intimacy, trust, care, vulnerability, and physical interdependence. Through sustained physical practice, Prison/Prophet Fantasy investigates how men learn to inhabit their bodies, relate to one another, and negotiate vulnerability. The performance transforms the training camp into a space where masculinity can be rehearsed, questioned, and transformed.

Artist Talk
Freddy Houndekindo, Marco Merenda and Israel Aloni, together with the audience-participants, will engage in a conversation about the dimension of repetition in dance practices and choreographic work.

Freddy explains that in his piece Prison/Prophet Fantasy, he examines “masculinity as a cultural system shaped by endurance, sacrifice, self-discipline, and the pursuit of strength” within or through the fantasy of prison as the site for rigorous practice or training.

In their project TRIUMEQ, Marco is interested in how a body, which is dependent on daily chemical regulation (medication), can reclaim its autonomy and vulnerability?

Both artists are processing the quotidian (daily) and recurring encounter with some form or mode of self-sustaining, survival even. In The Myth of Sisyphus, Albert Camus works through the tension between that which is repeated and the novelty of each moment in a sustained, continuous process. Furthermore, both works are also interested in the tension between the confronting challenges of being-living on the one hand, and the recurring commitment to vitality and survival on the other hand, both encapsulated in an iterative practice . Are both always co-existing in practices which are rooted in repetition?

In this Artist Talk we will address the dimension of repetition not only within a score or sequence of a performance, but also in the practice of an artist. What room and modes of serendipity and encounters with the unexpected is left in a repetitive practice? What dimensions of survival, or “keeping the flame alive”, are embedded in the continuous attempt of a long-term artistic practice? When you do something everyday, over a long duration of time, does it gain or lose significance?
